The officer had tried to arrest the man along Nairobi-Nakuru highway at Medical bus stop before pushing him onto the road. It is said that the officer, attached to Railways police station, was drunk and in civilian clothes.
“That officer was totally drunk because he could barely stand on his own and the worst part was that he was found with a bottle of a spirit in his pocket, ” eyewitness and matatu conductor John Kamose said.
Kamose said the policeman did not identify himself before trying to make the arrest.
“He only came and grabbed the man by his shoulder and as the man tried to flee he shoved him onto the road where he was hit by a Nissan,” he said.
He said the officer tried to run away but the public caught up with him.
The man who was hit by the speeding Nissan was rushed to Nakuru Provincial General Hospital while the police officer was taken to central police station. The man is in critical condition.
Charles Mwangi, a matatu operator along the route, said plain clothes police officers have harassed them for a long time. He said many drivers and conductors have gotten arrested for no apparent reason.
